Dots 2 Tots Toddler Room is designed for children from 2 years, until they are around 3. This is an exciting time in the development of your child and it’s when the fun really begins. A child has so many questions at this age and we aim to provide answers through experimental learning, play and interaction. In Toddlers the staff to child ratio is 1:4, and in this room we can have a maximum of eight toddlers. Toddlers have their own garden, which allows free flow access outside as much as possible. This room is beautifully set out with special areas for role play, dressing up, quiet time, reading, and circle time for interaction and communication. Toddler garden has a play house, tents, tunnels, log seats and two large sandpits. There are also tables for water play and planters for vegetables and plants. We are happy to cater for children's different toileting stages, with a nappy area, potties and help with toilet training on "big toilets." We are more than happy to support each child's individual toileting stage and are always on hand to advise and support parents and carers if required.
As our children become more aware of the world around them we use their interest and show them things that fill them with wonder.
Experimental and sensorial play (or messy play as we often call it) becomes fun and makes a huge impact on their impressionable minds. We love watching their faces as they plunge their hands into water at different temperatures, or mix heavy stones with fine sand or poor different coloured water onto fabric and watch what happens. In Toddlers, the areas of development are extended from the three core areas, to include all the areas as set out by the governing body for education, OFSTED. Following the EYFS (Early Years Foundation Stage) we plan lots of exciting and absorbing activities for this age group, again tailored to each child's interest and stage of development. Each child also has their own key worker who will be responsible for their development folders and planned activities. They will be the main point of contact to discuss any issues or queries over your child . Toddler room routine follows times in the day to allow for rest, energetic play, dancing, circle time and story time. In this room you will also meet the Nursery pets, four giant African Land snails!
The children's individual learning continues with their Learning Journey folders, where our highly trained staff observe and plan for your children's needs, interest and development.
We vary the main activities each day to provide variety, such as:
Sticking - lots of brightly coloured paper and kid-safe glue,
Painting - every child's favourite (and ours too !) We never cease to be amazed at the wonderful creations they make and the fun in their eyes as the paint goes (almost) where they hoped !
Sensory play (rice / flour / sand - this helps our children to understand how different things feel and move,
Water play - we have objects that float and sink and squirt and swim !
Music time - sing-a-long with nursery rhymes and rattles,
Story time - short stories with fun and acting.
Bubbles!- blowing and catching!
Gloop, play dough, foam and jelly.
Role play and dressing up.
Throwing and catching skills.
Balance activities to help promote co-ordination and motor skills
Peg puzzles and lots of jigsaws to develop hand eye co-ordination, concentration and pencil control.
A large variety of experiences to introduce children to mark making using different tools.
Pouring and spooning materials such as dry pasta, rice and dried peas then talking with them about their experiences and findings!
Lots of walks and outings into the wider environment.
A big emphasis for us at this age is teaching them how we all interact together and how to appreciate others. We focus on social skills and enabling them to express themselves. Teaching a child how to be patient, how to share and to take turns is often not easy, but these are lessons that can demonstrated in our circle times for Grace and Courtesy. The adults act as role models and encourage the children to think and behave in kind and positive ways towards their friends and others in the Nursery. We are a very sociable place and toddlers regularly free flow into our large pre-school room and garden, and also join pre-school for meal times enabling them to bond with other members of staff in the Nursery and older children. We invite approved visitors into the Nursery in the context of planned activities for the children, so far the most recent being a session with Mrs Melody for a music workshop, Stripey Wipey the clown, staff from the Raptor Foundation and a visit from Zoo Lab to name but a few. The children have also enjoyed a visit from the dentist and her puppet demonstrating the importance of dental health and hygiene!
We ask that you please bring a spare set of clothes in a named bag each day. A big nappy change can sometimes need a new set of clothes and occasionally playtimes can get messy too. This is especially necessary now with the opening of our mud café! Children have been having a great time in this area and have been getting rather dirty!
